Physical Testing

Health Assessment

This is compulsory before any exercise programme can be devised. If the trainer has any concern about the health results you will be informed immediately and may be asked to seek GP clearance before proceeding any further.

Aim: To optimise your safety whilst exercising and to provide baseline information.

The Tests:

Resting Heart Rate (RHR)

This is the rate at which the heart beats at rest and is taken using a heart rate monitor whilst you sit back and relax for 5 minutes. This rate can vary according to age, fitness, underlying stress/anxiety or medical conditions.

Blood Pressure (BP)

This is the pressuire exerted on the arteries as the blood passes through. The range of normal readings vary according to age and again can be influenced by general health status, fitness levels, stress/anxiety and underlying medical conditions.

Exercise raises heart rate and blood pressure so if a client has elevated readings for any reason then it is essential that they and the trainer are aware so that the training programme can be designed accordingly to optimise the client`s safety.

Peak Flow Rate

This is a measure of general lung function and is measured by blowing into a small machine. The readings vary according to age and height and are influenced by chest conditions such as asthma, smoking and general fitness.

Body Weight

This is taken using digital scales and used to ascertain your body composition.

Body Composition

A reading of body fat percentage is taken using a hand held machine. This is a more accurate method than body mass index which does not take account of lean tisue. There are normal ranges for men and women.

FITNESS ASSESSMENT

This is optional but will only be conducted if the results of the health assessment are satisfactory.

Aim:To assess current fitness levels and provide baselines for future comparison.

The Tests:

These are individualised according to ability, current exercise and percieved fitness levels.

They consist of aerobic/cardiovascular, muscular strength/endurance and felxibility testing.

Examples:

Aerobic:The Chester Step Test- a sub-maximal progressive test which involves wearing a  heart rate monitor whilst stepping up and down on an aerobic step at a rate determined by a tape.

Muscular Strength/Endurance:Crunches and press ups-1 minute or a maximum of each.

Flexibility

Simple tests will be undertaken to assess the flexibility in your legs, upper +lower back, chest and hips. Muscular tightness can affect the range of movement of a joint and can lead to problems in every day life as well as when exercising..

The results of all of these tests will be correlated and the information fed back to you

BENEFITS:

*Establishes your safety from day 1

*Establishes baselines of current health & fitness for future comparison

*Facilitates appropriate individual exercise programming and motivation towards personal objectives
