This is compulsory before any exercise programme can be devised. If the trainer has any concern about the health results you will be informed immediately and may be asked to seek GP clearance before proceeding any further.
Aim: To optimise your safety whilst exercising and to provide baseline information.
The Tests:
Resting Heart Rate (RHR)
This is the rate at which the heart beats at rest and is taken using a heart rate monitor whilst you sit back and relax for 5 minutes. This rate can vary according to age, fitness, underlying stress/anxiety or medical conditions.
Blood Pressure (BP)
This is the pressuire exerted on the arteries as the blood passes through. The range of normal readings vary according to age and again can be influenced by general health status, fitness levels, stress/anxiety and underlying medical conditions.
Exercise raises heart rate and blood pressure so if a client has elevated readings for any reason then it is essential that they and the trainer are aware so that the training programme can be designed accordingly to optimise the client`s safety.
Peak Flow Rate
This is a measure of general lung function and is measured by blowing into a small machine. The readings vary according to age and height and are influenced by chest conditions such as asthma, smoking and general fitness.
Body Weight
This is taken using digital scales and used to ascertain your body composition.
Body Composition
A reading of body fat percentage is taken using a hand held machine. This is a more accurate method than body mass index which does not take account of lean tisue. There are normal ranges for men and women.
